Lecture1: Looking Back and Moving Forward: Ecological Solutions in Horticulture by Owen Grummitt
An overview of Owen’s career and his highlights from studying the Master of Horticulture with the RHS. We’ll see some pictures from recent design and landscape renovations and hear about his dissertation project, which focused on establishing moss lawns on dysfunctional hard surfaces.
Owen Grummitt has a BSc in Environmental Science and has just achieved a Distinction in the RHS Master of Horticulture, having won the 2022 Japanese Garden Society full scholarship. He has been working as Head Gardener at Heritage Gardening Ltd since 2014. He leads a team of fifteen gardeners and landscapers and specialises in renovating and maintaining historic manor gardens in Wiltshire. Owen’s background in environmental science and ecology means he aims to work with natural processes to produce sustainable plant communities. He is passionate about promoting an ecological approach to horticulture, to design and produce gardens fit for the coming century.
Lecture2: Visions of Paradise Revisited by Graham Hardman
For the last few years Robert Ketchell, Jill Raggett, Ian Chrystie and Graham Hardman have been working on writing and publishing a series of books on Japanese gardens. The series is called Visions of Paradise, a reference to the booklet published by JGS in 2011 as an accompaniment to the JGS Exhibition of the same name. The first volume, “The Gardens of Japan”, has recently been published. This talk will explain what the series is about and what the plans are for future volumes.
Graham needs little introduction, he is a former JGS Chair (2003-2010) and Honorary Vice President (2010-2024). He is a regular speaker on Japanese gardens in the UK, has written many articles for Shakkei and co-led tours to Japan for JGS members. He has project-managed gardens that JGS has built in public places, from Birmingham Botanical Gardens (2005) to the Islands of Peace Garden in Coventry (2021). In 2015 Graham was awarded the ‘Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Rosette’ by the Japanese government.
