JGS SE January Event

22 January 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Southeast Region is delighted to announce its 2023 January Study 1/2 Day –

Charles Cheshire’s Journey into Japanese Gardens

A virtual lecture meeting using Zoom, open to all JGS members and friends
Date: 22nd January 2023 14:00 to 17:00
No charge

Outline: Our January meeting will take the form of a study 1/2 day with Charles Chesshire, the renowned garden designer whose creations can be found as far afield as New York, Long island, Saudi Arabia, London and France. He is the author of many books, has contributed articles to the RHS Garden magazine and the Sunday Times, lectures widely, and has been the consultant to a number of important garden restorations.

Charles has a particular interest in Japanese Gardens and those of us who visited Morton Hall this year – all 90 acres of which were designed by him – were delighted to see the Stroll Garden there. Charles will be talking about his own journey into the Japanese Garden, and how he has interpreted it to fit into an English setting and mind set, and about the creation of the Stroll Garden at Morton Hall.

By way of a contrast, he will also be talking about the Tea Garden, a topic dear to his heart, and its role as a “journey” or rite of passage. Tea Gardens can contain so many subtle allusions – to a mountain place in the city, to Chinese literati – and Charles will be reminding us of these and discussing their significance.

Joining details will be sent to members closer to the date. If you wish to attend please contact the secretary at sesec@jgs.org.uk.
