South East Region March Online Talk

March 23 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The subject of the talk will be the garden at the Adachi Museum, which will be familiar to many of you.

The gardens of the Adachi Museum are often described as the “best” garden in Japan, and yet the gardens cannot be entered and are barely 50 years old. Why are they so popular, and what do they do that other places do not? Why do so many people make the long journey to this out of the way part of Japan every year? Let’s take a look at the gardens and decide for ourselves.

The talk will be given by long standing member and SE committee member Sarah Dixon.

Sarah has been fascinated by Japanese gardens since she saw her first one in a public park in Swansea as a child, although she didn’t realise what it was. When she saw Maureen Busby’s garden at Chelsea she had a moment of recognition, and joined the JGS on the spot. Since then she has visited Japan numerous times to look at gardens (and textiles, another obsession) and as a hands-on gardener has always been in awe of the astonishing quality of their maintenance. She always enjoy visiting Adachi and decided to look a little closer at its story.
