JGS SE Virtual Meeting
January 26 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Southeast Region is delighted to announce its 2025 January Study 1/2 Day –
Talks will be given by Tony Kirkham, retired head of arboretum at Kew gardens.
Lecture1
“Following Ernest Wilson in Japan a Century On”
After spending 10 years plant collecting in Western China, one of the most prolific of Edwardian plant collectors, Ernest Henry Wilson spent over a year traveling around Japan studying cherries, conifers, and azaleas. This lecture will visit some of the places that Wilson visited and show some of Wilson’s images with Tony’s present-day images overlaid and some of the amazing Japanese trees and shrubs that he and Tony saw on their travels. (Many of the trees that he photographed are still there.)
Lecture2
“Trees a cut above the Rest”
This lecture will cover topical subjects around trees including tree management and tree selection with the threats of climate change and increased invasion of pests and diseases. We will cover tree pruning and tree planting/establishment techniques etc. You will also meet some of my favorite arboreal people and trees from around the world. This is quite a lively talk that will be tailored to Japanese trees and gardens.
A virtual lecture meeting using Zoom, open to all JGS members and friends
